Score on Sunday – Once There was a Hushpuppy – Benh Zeitlin and Dan Romer
Welcome back to the Score on Sunday. We have been suffering at the hands of some pretty chilly weather here and we wanted to take this opportunity to bring a little bit of summer your way. The piece we have chosen for this week is something just a little bit special and is sure to brighten up any cold day.
The Piece
This week we have chosen “Once there was a Hush Puppy” from the wonderful “Beasts of the Southern Wilds”. Now we know that not everyone loved Beast of the Southern Wild. Even within our own crew we were pretty much split right down the middle about what we thought of it. There was however one thing that we could all agree on and that was that this track is awesome.
This piece is both uplifting and moving at the same time. It captures that idea of trying to find your place in the world whilst also showing that even the smallest voice can make a big noise.
The Composer
This piece was written by Dan Romer and Benh Zeitlin for Beasts of the Southern Wild which Benh also co-wrote and directed. Benh created Court 13 which is a New Orleans collective of Artists, Film makers and Musicians with a clear purpose to create adventurous art. This is where Dan and Ben Worked on both their first short film together “Glory at Sea” and “Beasts of the Southern Wild” both of which went onto have great success on the film festival circuit.

Score on Sunday – Ballad of the Goddess – Koji Kondo
Welcome back to the Score on Sunday. We here at Forty Third Minute Productions have decided that this week we will take a step away from film music and bring you something from the gaming world. We have decided to go for a track from a game that was very divisive on its release and gamers are still arguing weather or not it was a good game. We for sure think it was a great game and we are big fans of the series. We are of course speaking of Skyward Sword from the legend of Zelda franchise.
The Piece
We have settled on “The Ballad of the Goddess” for this week’s piece. It is used many time throughout but during the 25th anniversary concert it can be broken down into too many sections. The first being a solo harp playing the melody before it drops away and a full orchestra takes over for the rest of the piece changing the melody from a soft beautiful harp piece to a full blown rousing orchestra piece.
The Composer
Koji Kondo is one of the most famous composers in the gaming world. He first started composing for Nintendo back in 1984 on titles such as Punch Out and Devil World. He still composes for Nintendo for this day and has created some of the most iconic music in gaming history. If you are a gamer then at some point you will have heard one of his pieces of music for sure.

Score on Sunday – The Cinematic Orchestra – Arrival of the Birds and Transformation
Happy 2015 and welcome to our new blog “Score on Sunday”. We have been away for quite a while and it was an incredibly busy 2014 and sadly we didn’t have time to bring you our normal three blogs a week. We always wanted to come back but we didn’t want to do so with just the same old stuff so we thought we would come up with something new.
We have always loved film music hear at Forty Third Minute productions and so we thought it would be fun to write about some of our favorite pieces from film, tv and games that we think you should hear.
Kicking us off is a piece of music that has be used in a couple of films firstly “The Crimson Wing:Mystery of the Flamingo” and most recently in the Steven and Jane Hawkin’s Biopic “The Theory of Everything” and it was written by the aptly named “The Cinematic Orchestra”
The Piece
The piece is call “Arrival of the Bird and Transformation” and it really is beautiful. it’s soft start builds into a rousing string melody that feels like it is taking you on a journey. it was written to repsent the arrival of the flamigos in The Crimson Wing and it really does cunjour up that mental image of a flock of birds arriving.
The Composer
The Cinematic Orchestra is a British nu-jazz and electronic music group, created in 1999 by Jason Swinscoe. They have had three studio albums to date “Motion”, “Every Day” and “Ma Fluer”. in between there albums they have created sound tracks for films with one of there most interesting projects to date being the sound track that created for the 1929 silent documentary “Man with a Movie Camera”.
Other Recommended listening
The Cinematic Orchestras third studio album Ma Fleur is something you should definitely have a listen to. One of the stand out tracks from the album “To Build a Home” has been used many times in both TV and Film and whilst it is a great song the rest of the album is well worth checking out.
